Do you know the difference between managing your career and being busy not going anywhere? Click here for the podcast.
"Busyness" is procrastination masked as productivity, and many times we can fall into this trap and think that we are making progress. This is a vicious cycle of being busy, but not productive, just because we are "doing something". The question is, are you doing the right things? Busyness does not mean you are managing your career and it's strategic for you to know the difference.
In the last 12 months, have you:
- Learned a new skill that you can add to your resume?
- Connected with anyone who can strategically help in your next move?
- Completed any training that you can apply now?
- Added a new responsibility to your role or taken a stretch assignment?
- Received visibility internally or externally?
If you cannot specifically say what you have accomplished in 2 or more areas of this list, then re-assess what you are doing and look at where you can adjust to make an impact.
Try This:
Create a strategic checklist comprised of all the things you can do to keep your goal as the focus. Check your list weekly/monthly to ensure you stay on track. The objective is not to be busy, but to manage your career in such a way that your actions, small and large, puts you one step closer to your goal.
